If you consider what you would sell your goods for, it would likely be just as easy to buy new items once you arrive here. Shipping would be best for the objects that you absolutely must keep, but the basics like sofas and chairs are just as cheaply purchased here.

Unless you have antiques, heirlooms, or other items of sentimental value, or are just really attached to your furniture, I would buy new.

DO expect to purchase new electronics ... Television, computers, game systems, and the like, as the electrical systems are different in North America, and your U.K. electronics, even with adapters, will have a shorter lifespan.

There are many quality furniture stores. The difference between quality stores and junk stores is obvious when you walk into the store. The junk stores are large and warehouse looking. The better stores that you would probably know are Ethan Allan, Crate and Barrell, Pottery Barn just to name a few. Contemporary stores such as Ligne Roset aren't available everywhere but are online. Ballards is another great online store. I am sure there are many local independents in your area that are well known for quality pieces. I sold furniture in high end stores for years. Don't believe that veneers are bad. Most furniture is veneer. Veneer is wood and is not MDF. The process is the reason so many wood pieces have such detail. Solid wood is rare and usually a local craftsman and generally is in oak. Sales designers in quality stores are knowledgeable about their furniture, the fabrics, and can work with you in your home to make sure you are getting the sizes, fabrics, etc. They are not the vultures in the warehouse stores that are on commission only and have no design background at all, nor do they need it. They are just moving volume. That is a huge difference from quality designers so don't go on the premise that you cannot trust your designer. Once you recognize quality instead of volume selling, you won't have any problem knowing where to buy your furniture.

It depends on your budget. If you have the money, then look to William's of Sonoma Home or Ethan Allen. They're pretty good and I don't believe they use "cheap" materials to make their furniture. When purchasing furniture, be sure it's all hard wood and not veneers over plywood.

In my opinion, furniture is waaaaay over priced and in today's economy, you should be able to negotiate a good deal.

Here's a good link to get you started on furniture education

Don't use a sales person as a resource for asking questions about furniture and furniture quality. Their main goal is to make money and furniture sales are really tight right now.

I lucked out and found a really knowledgeable sales lady at our local Macy's furniture store and I utilize her when there's a really good sale going on. I got to know her and developed a working relationship and I think that was the key to me being able to trust that she was giving me good info and not just trying to sell me something to put money in her pocket. Macy's quality is "ok" for my budget and taste. I purchase their "furniture warranty" which provides an insurance policy for 7 years (the typical life of furniture). It covers everything from wine stains to crayon marks.

I used this warranty last year to replace custom sofa covers that my toddler took a crayon to. The cost to me would have been $4,000! without the warranty.

Prior to having money to purchase furniture, I had to utilize thrift shops quite a bit to furnish my home. You can see more about that at the following link. Good luck to you.

You can try goodwill or salvation army. I think they use some of the money earned on used items to train people to repair small appliances.
